General Membership Meeting - June 14, 2012 - Minutes

The meeting was called to order by President Benita Klaizner at 7:37 PM in the Tres Rios Cantina. There were 64 members and 5 guests present.

Findlay Chevrolet: Unfortunately, Slim Findlay's Service, manager, had an emergency and could not be here. We wish his son well. Benita reminded us all to participate in the Findlay Frank's Father's Day Car Show on June 16th. We thank them for the outstanding support they provide us.

Dominic Parisi - LVH:
Benita Thanked Dominic and the LVH for all their support and for providing great deals in their specialty restaurants for us.

A motion to approve the May meeting minutes: was made by Scott Mergele and seconded by Bob O'Brien. Motion carried.

Treasurer's Report: Benita said the treasurer's report is available on our website and if you have any questions please see our treasurer, Denise Karpa.

Old Business:

New Business: Due to extenuating circumstances the E-Board Meeting will be moved to the Wednesday night before the next meeting. Anyone who wants to present an event, please check with Benita.

Introduction of New and Prospective Members: Ellie Johnson reported we currently have 189 members. Our guests tonight are Gary Lowers, Rudy Blum, Ralph Terry, Yessie Medina and Ken Thornton.

Committee Reports:

Drag Racing / Racer's Edge: Lanny Lowman let us know Round 3 had six participants and one guest. The next Racer's Edge event is June 16th at the LVMS (after the car show). Round 5 will be September 1st. The NV Open Road Challenge took place in May and Pat Russell said it was a great event. A 2006 Nascar Dodge Charger went an average of 217.557 MPH and 140 through the narrows. September is the 25th Anniversary of the Silver State Challenge. Attendees will see a once in a life time event. Cathy described Racer's Edge as competitive driving events. There are 3 drag races, 3 auto crosses and 1 shoot out. There will be an autocross workshop August 25th in the evening at the Silverton. Ken Rees came in first at NV Open Road and Rich Maslek second. Pat has the history of the Silver State on our website. Sunshine:
Sally had some good news; Benita's daughter is getting married this summer, Sally's grandson is joining the service, Darrell and Sherrie are having an anniversary, Scott and Donna will be married 20 years this year and it is Connie and Jim's 10th anniversary. Terry Rees retired two days ago and Sharron retired two weeks ago. Good luck to all of them. Jim Gregorius was diagnosed with bladder cancer and will be treated with chemotherapy. Sally said Dave Karpa was diagnosed with a tumor on his spine and with bone cancer, fortunately which is treatable. He will be having radiation treatments. Our thoughts are with them both. Lastly, Irene Duis' Mother passed away and our blessings to her.

Past Events: Linda and Benita could hardly tell us about Comedy night, they were laughing so hard. It was great fun and since Bob McVane was not there, the comedian called him up. Bonnie almost did not make it to the bathroom and Rex got razzed over his gas… or lack of. Scott said the Mohave Mile had only 2 participants, but they had a great time. The fastest car went 234.4 mph. Scott got to 203.9 with a tail wind! Congratulations Scott! The next event will be Sept 29-30th. Roy thanked Rex for his great planning for the Chloride run and said 49 people participated. There were corvettes, cars, a truck and UTV's. Lennard was presented with a gas can to commemorate his forgetting to get gas before heading out on a desert run where there are virtually no stations. Gary Lowers took the prize for forgetting to ever turn on his walkie talkie until the end of the run.

Upcoming Events: Ken reminded us all to participate in the Findlay Fathers Day Car Show on June 16th. You will want to arrive at 8AM to park together. This is a free event from 10AM to 4PM with free food and drinks. There is an optional $5.00 CS donation for Findlay's charity. We will be having an IPOF Car Show at Bass Pro shops September 8th. The Street Teens Sonic Drive-In Event, chaired by Sally will be on June 21st at the Sonic at 1458 E. Lake Mead from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. They are offering 10% off everything. Donations needed for these teens are: disposable razors, shaving cream, and other care products particularly in travel sizes. Donations can be brought to the July meeting. Sally said most of these teens are on the street due to unfortunate family circumstances. Breakfast in the Park is September 23rd. Sally's Idaho Trip will be from Aug 3-7th to Park City, Jackson Hole and then to Burley Idaho for a paddle wheel riverboat dinner. Denise is set for the Tuacahn Outdoor Theatre. They will stay in Mesquite and have a bus to and from the theatre. The Mt. Charleston Run, chaired by Connie, will be on July 21st. After a leisurely run, they will have lunch for $17.00 including tip at the lodge. Meet at the Santa Fe at 9:39 AM No sign-up is necessary. There is a $5.00 C.S. contribution. The Super Chevy Show is on September 14-16 at the LVMS. The cost is $50 which includes the show and auto cross. Registration begins August 1st on their web site, but you can sign up with Skip anytime. You still must register with Super Chevy.

Miscellaneous Announcements: Jimmy Alksnis has a new, large size racing helmet and a neck collar for sale. Cindy let us know Black Jack Corvette Club is having a 21 poker run July 7th around the Oasis Bars. There are 5 stops beginning at the Oasis at Tropicana and Decatur at 10 AM. Benita will be in Prague at the European Corvette event for the next meeting.

Clean Car Award: Larry Leard announced he drove a Corvette to the meeting. Finally! He has been in the club for 39 years. He has also resurrected his 64 corvette coupe. The winner of the clean car was Ken Kroger.
