Tackling
the Texas Big Bend Open Road Race
Ken Rees and Lanny Lowman
The
BBOR race takes
place on US Highway 285 South from Fort Stockton to Sanderson and back
(about 59.0 miles each way - or 118.0 miles). It is much the same as
our own Silver State Classic Challenge events in Nevada, except the
SSCC events are just one-way, although for 90 miles. Ken and Lanny ran
in the 130 MPH Grand Sport Division in Lanny's 2007 Z06.
South bound Ken was driving and Lanny
navigating. Heading North on Texas 285 back to Ft Stockton Lanny was
driving and Ken navigating. Below are some notes from Lanny on the second
leg, back (North) to Fort Stockton.
"We are
making up the time that the Shelby Mustang and I (bad navigator) made
Ken loose on the way going South to Sanderson. We passed the next
three car in front of us getting back up to our average speed. We
completed the passes in the southern end of the course (lots of curves)
knowing that they could easily get back past us where the road was
much straighter in the northern end. The first guy was in a Shelby
Mustang who, was 30 seconds late on the first leg. The second was
a C-5 Lingenfelter that was about on time and the third was a C-6
Lingenfelter Z-06 (in this picture) that was 40 seconds late on the
first leg. Since we only had 30 seconds between cars because of the
early race problems, I wanted to get our average back as soon as possible.
I knew these guys would probably pass us back later and the two Corvettes
did get back past. The Shelby finished but had problems. The C-5 broke
down and we passed him again. The C-6 passed and was 19 seconds late
on this leg. We finished .081 seconds early (Ken is
a Great Navigator) and took the win."
Congratulations
to Ken and Lanny for taking First Place!
