Drag Racing Workshop - May 21, 2011

We will be having a Drag Workshop on Friday, May 20, to help out some newbies who are interested in joining us for our drag series. For the experienced drag racers, this is a great opportunity to shake out the cobwebs and warm up before our first Drag Series event on Saturday, May 21. If you participated in the Mojave Mile last month, you have already done the shaking and warming, so come on out and help the newbies! Here is the plan.

Meet at the Iron Skillet at 7 p.m. That's the restaurant inside Petro's Truck Stop which is right off I-15 Exit 54, the Speedway Blvd. exit, north of town. This will give us a chance, well, to eat, but also to talk about what everyone would like to accomplish that night and what we can do to help. We will be available to ride along with you, or you could ride along with us if you want. We can also hook you up with tips and tricks.

Around 8:30, we will mosey down the street and get in line for Midnight Mayhem. This is an event that the Speedway puts on with a sponsor (this year it's Dodge) that's designed to get kids who do illegal street racing off the street and into a safe and legal environment. We're kids, right? Actually, it's open to anyone who wants to come do some runs. Their rules are a little different than they will be when we compete on Saturday. No helmets are needed at all, but I usually wear mine anyway. They check your driver's license, registration (no temporary tags) and proof of insurance. If you don't own the car, you have to have a note from the owner. They want to make sure you didn't "borrow" dad's car without his permission! The car must be street legal. No coolers, alcohol or weapons - they check the trunk or back area. From their website (URL below): "Entry fee is $15 to race or ride along and $7 admission for spectators. Ride-along passes and restricted-area passes are $10." Interpretation: If you want to drive, $15. If you want to go to the stands and watch, $7. If you want to watch, but also be able to hang out in the grid area, $10. As far as ride alongs, I'm a little confused. Is it $10 or is it $15? Better to make sure you have $15 on hand and ask when you get there. I don't remember if they take checks or charge cards. I suspect not for the charge cards. I recommend bringing cash.

Now, I know what those who have done Midnight Mayhem before are thinking. You get there early, you wait in line for a little bit to pay and get teched, you get two runs in, then it gets really crowded. You sit for quite a while in between your next two runs (falling asleep), then you give it up and go home. But you've been missing the best part of Midnight Mayhem. While you're leaving and going home, so is everyone else. And even though the official event times are 9 - 11, sometimes they let us run well past that. So what does this mean? Everyone leaves early and they stay open late? Hot laps! As many as you want! I can't guarantee that will happen this time, but I think when it gets crowded and we have more time in between laps would be a good time to touch base with the beginners, find out how they're doing and if they have any new questions or just hang out and visit.

Here's the website. There is a schedule on it for all of the Midnight Mayhems this year.
